The company is known for its Ocus® series of microscope scanners. According to Grundium, these compact and high-precision devices help make digital and remote pathology more accessible by offering affordable and easy-to-use solutions for laboratories of all sizes.
Visiopharm was founded in 2002 by Michael Grunkin and Johan Doré Hansen. The Denmark-based company focuses on advancing precision medicine through AI-powered image analysis technology for pathology research and diagnostics.
For research purposes, Visiopharm provides tools that help scientists, pathologists, and image analysis experts generate accurate tissue-based research data. In diagnostics, the company offers clinical applications and currently has nine IVDR-cleared diagnostic algorithms available for customers in the European Union. These tools are designed to support diagnostic decisions and can be integrated into existing laboratory workflows. Visiopharm serves more than 750 customer accounts across over 40 countries worldwide.
“Grundium and Visiopharm bring together highly complementary capabilities. This combination allows us to connect biomarker analysis, imaging, and quality management in new ways, while continuing to support the software and workflows our customers rely on today. Together, we are better positioned to support the next phase of precision diagnostics,” said Michael Grunkin, CEO of Visiopharm
The combined platform is designed to make digital pathology more efficient, scalable, and accessible. By using compact scanning technology, it helps reduce costs and removes some of the infrastructure challenges faced by laboratories and healthcare providers.
By bringing together Grundium’s scanner technology and Visiopharm’s AI-powered software, the new platform can support a wide variety of applications. These include individual lab operations, large-scale enterprise deployments, biomarker discovery, translational research, clinical studies, and companion diagnostic programs.
The two companies had already been working together before the acquisition by integrating their technologies for laboratory customers. This acquisition further strengthens and expands their existing partnership.
“Digital pathology has the potential to drastically improve diagnostic accuracy, workflow efficiency and global access to expert care. The platform we are creating brings these capabilities together to make diagnosis faster, more reliable and more efficient, transforming patient care and supporting the development of new breakthrough treatments, particularly in oncology,” said Andy Thomson, Operating Partner at EW Healthcare Partners and Chair of the Board of Grundium.
To ensure a smooth experience for current customers and partners, Grundium’s digital scanners and Visiopharm’s precision pathology software will continue to be offered and supported separately. This allows customers to keep using their existing solutions or combine both technologies as their needs change over time.
