Getir has Acquired New York City-based Online Grocery Company FreshDirect

The acquisition highlights Getir's strategic goals to expand in North America, where it faces off against well-funded established companies like DoorDash, which has raised $2.5 million, and Instacart, which has raised $2.9 billion.

It most recently paid €1.2 billion to purchase Gorillas, a rival grocery delivery business, valuing the combined company at $10 billion. The amount it paid for FreshDirect has not been disclosed, but given that the company has already raised $280 million in investment, it is probably a substantial sum.

Getir was once valued at $11.8 billion, but it has since raised $1.8 billion in capital. A report submitted in September of this year, however, claims that this valuation is far lower and that the company was only raising $500 million at a $2.5 billion valuation.

To provide quicker services, FreshDirect will make use of Getir's technological infrastructure and operational reach. Additionally, it will allow Getir to expand the variety and calibre of its product offering—particularly with regard to fresh goods—making it even more alluring to its clientele in New York.
