SUMMARY

  • Simmetry.ai, a synthetic data company based in Osnabrück focused on advancing AI solutions across agriculture, food, and industrial sectors, has secured €330k in funding from NBank, the development bank of Lower Saxony.

The investment was awarded through the High-Tech Incubator (HTI) accelerator programme.

Founded in 2024 simmetry.ai is a spin-off from the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), created by Kai von Szadkowski, Anton Elmiger and Stefan Stiene.

The company develops a simulation platform that produces photorealistic, fully annotated synthetic data across multiple sensor types to train computer vision models, focusing on agriculture, food, and industrial applications.

According to simmetry.ai, its platform supports tasks including semantic segmentation, object detection, 3D pose estimation, and regression. The solution is designed for computer vision engineers and AI developers working in robotics, autonomous machinery, quality inspection, and other sectors that depend on visual analysis in complex and dynamic environments.

The company aims to solve the data bottleneck that limits AI adoption. It notes that over 80% of AI development effort is often spent on collecting and preparing data, particularly in industries like agriculture and manufacturing, where capturing real-world scenarios is expensive and time-consuming. This challenge frequently makes AI implementation economically difficult.

To address this, simmetry.ai generates synthetic data that enhances real-world datasets. By creating photorealistic images across controlled conditions and edge cases, the platform helps improve model accuracy and reliability. Its applications include precision weed control, food production quality inspection and AI-powered industrial monitoring.

The funding will support the development of a scalable platform that allows developers to generate customised, fully annotated training datasets. The solution aims to significantly reduce the time and cost required to build robust computer vision models, particularly in sectors where collecting real-world data remains challenging.

Anton Elmiger CTO and co-founder of simmetry.ai, said, “We started with agriculture because it is both a highly impactful and technically demanding field for AI. Improving how crops are monitored and managed can support more efficient and sustainable farming, but building reliable computer vision systems here is extremely difficult due to the lack of diverse training data.

“With this grant, we are turning our technology into a platform that makes advanced data generation accessible to more teams, helping innovation move faster not only in agriculture, but also in industrial and other real-world applications.”
