SUMMARY
- Cologne-based startup Ordio, which offers a People Operating System for deskless industries, has raised €12 million in a Series A round to launch ‘Payroll Plus’, a fully automated payroll solution for deskless workers.
The funding round was led by 3VC, with support from Wecken & Cie., and existing investors Capnamic and Simon Capital.
“This marks the most significant advancement in payroll automation in decades,” said David Keuenhof, Founder and Co-CEO. “Tasks that once required weeks will soon be accomplished in minutes, entirely without human intervention.”
Founded in 2021 by David Keuenhof and Gregor Pilz, Ordio is transforming operations in deskless industries—where traditional software often falls short. Its modular platform automates key processes across the employee lifecycle, from shift planning to payroll. Today, Ordio supports over 1,500 companies in sectors like hospitality, healthcare, retail, and manufacturing.

The idea came from Keuenhof’s experience running 135 employees at his Sushi Ninja restaurant chain. He found that managing shifts, sick leave, and payroll was chaotic, and no existing tools were built for such fast-moving, labor-heavy environments. Most solutions were designed for office workers—not frontline teams.
“Ordio is redefining how teams and processes are organised in the hospitality, retail, and service industries. Instead of using individual tools and manually accounting for payroll, users receive a comprehensive cloud solution that automates all processes. We see Ordio as a strong driver for the future of shift work and are excited to support the team,” says Federico Rota Candiani, Investment Manager at 3VC.
According to Ordio, more than 100 million people in Europe work in deskless roles across industries like healthcare, hospitality, retail, and logistics. Despite a digital solutions market worth over €20 billion, these sectors remain underserved, still relying on manual processes, spreadsheets, and paperwork, while office software continues to grow rapidly.
In Germany alone, around 48,000 hospitality businesses shut down between 2020 and 2023, with some sectors facing turnover rates of up to 50%. Payroll is especially complex in these environments, requiring accurate handling of wages, bonuses, absences, and tax rules—far more complicated than in typical office settings.
Ordio is tackling this challenge with smart automation that goes far beyond traditional HR or shift planning tools. Its modular platform combines everything from onboarding and scheduling to payroll in one seamless solution tailored for the realities of the deskless workforce.
Launching in summer 2025, Payroll Plus will be the first fully automated payroll platform designed specifically for complex wage calculations in deskless jobs. While Ordio already automates gross wage calculations, Payroll Plus will bring full net payroll processing into the mix.
With revenue quadrupling in 2024, Ordio plans to use the new funding to expand AI-driven payroll features and become the core operating system for real-world teams.
