Exobiosphere Secures €1 Mn Grant to Scale Space-Based Drug Discovery Platform

Exobiosphere, a Luxembourg-based space biotech startup, has received €1 million in non-dilutive funding through Luxembourg’s Jeune Entreprise Innovante (JEI) support scheme.

The company works on drug discovery and biomedical research in microgravity. It uses space-based environments to study biological processes and explore new possibilities for developing medicines.

The grant, provided through Luxembourg’s Ministry of the Economy, will support Exobiosphere’s business expansion, daily operations, and growth. The funding will also help the company scale its orbital high-throughput screening platform.

It allows us to expand our commercial activities, strengthen our team, and bring our technological offer to more pharmaceutical and biotech partners around the world. We’re grateful for the continued support of the Luxembourg innovation ecosystem and Ministry of Economy,” said Kyle Acierno, co-founder and CEO of Exobiosphere.

Exobiosphere was founded in 2024 by Acierno, Dr. Bruno Santos, and Dr. Olivia Borgue. The company is developing a space-based testing platform for pharmaceutical and biotech companies.

Exobiosphere aims to build what it describes as the world’s first standardised high-throughput testing platform in space. The system allows companies to run automated experiments in orbit and study potential new treatments in microgravity.

Its main product is called the Orbital High-Throughput Screening (OHTS) system. According to the company, it can run more than 2,000 automated experiments at the same time during a mission. The results and activities can also be monitored from Earth in real time.

The platform can handle different laboratory tasks automatically, including working with cells, testing drugs and compounds, processing samples, and analysing results through imaging and plate readers. These capabilities can support research such as 3D disease models, stem cell development, and testing how effective new drugs are.
