Chromacity, a Scottish laser technology business, secures €1.18 million in new funding from existing investors – Eos Advisory, Kelvin Capital and Scottish Enterprise – to support the launch of its latest ultrafast laser technology focussed on the healthcare market, and from the UK Government’s Innovate UK programme to develop its technology for monitoring agricultural emissions.

Chromacity, an Edinburgh-based company, creates and produces infrared lasers that are ultrafast, tuneable, compact, and reasonably priced. These lasers are utilised in quantum applications, microscopy, spectroscopy, and advanced research.

Chromacity is rapidly expanding its global clientele, which already includes the US Air Force, Harvard University, and Sandia National Laboratories. Prior to now, sales in the UK were concentrated on the university sector; now, their newly developed healthcare-focused product is opening up far more commercial opportunities.

With its inexpensive light source for medical diagnostics, such as biological imaging of collagen, which can provide an early diagnosis for a variety of medical disorders, the company's new "920" product is well-suited for medical imaging.

By producing a light pulse with a duration of up to 100 femtoseconds, the '920' aids in illuminating collagen, the main component of the body's muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissues, enabling researchers to delve within living cells.

One quadrillionth, or one millionth of one billionth of a second, is equal to a femtosecond. The user benefits greatly from the short pulse because there is less collateral damage to the sample being analysed due to the short duration of the laser's operation.

In order to support the transition to net zero agriculture, Chromacity has also received funding from the Innovate UK program to develop a new monitoring tool that will use its patented infra-red laser technology to measure important greenhouse gases like ammonia and ethane in real-time.

Robert Black, an accomplished executive and non-executive director with experience in the photonics, IT, and robotics industries; Richard Laming, a successful academic and founder of technology businesses spanning optoelectronics, MEMS, and electronics; and investor director Graham Miller, Director of Global Sales and Business Development at Agilent Technologies, round out the board of directors that Julian joins.
