SUMMARY

  • Amsterdam-based startup Brineworks raises $2.2 million in funding
  • Brineworks is constructing the ocean-based CO2 removal system of the future that is responsible, scalable, and economical.

In addition to offering a sizable cash stream, this dual-output technology sets a new benchmark by extracting CO2 for less than $100 per ton.

Engines can be powered by the electrolyser, which offers a clean, decentralized, and independent energy source that is neither dependent on the grid or impacted by international disputes over the availability of fossil fuels. This represents actual energy sustainability. This is essential for decarbonizing heavily polluting sectors like aviation and maritime and for attaining large-scale e-Fuel generation.

New innovations in seawater electrolysers from it have raised the bar for CO2 extraction, with a clear route to less than $100 per ton. By comparison, the International Energy Agency estimates that Direct Air Capture costs between $230 and $630 per metric ton of CO2.

Gudfinnur Sveinsson, CEO of Brineworks said, "Current CO2 capture methods, whether from industrial sources or Direct Air Capture, are either not sustainable, too limited in scale, or too costly, Brineworks offers an alternative that is sustainable, scalable, and cost-effective, making e-Fuel scale-up for the maritime and aviation industries a real possibility."

Hampus Jakobsson, General Partner at Pale blue dot said, “What if any nation in the world could make sustainable oil from renewable electricity and seawater alone? We think Brineworks found the key to that."

Gudfinnur Sveinsson and Dr. Joseph Perryman co-founded Brineworks, and this additional funding will assist the company expedite its technological development and be essential to launching its first technical pilot project.

About Brineworks

Brineworks is constructing the ocean-based CO2 removal system of the future that is responsible, scalable, and economical. Because it allows for the extraction of green hydrogen and responsibly deployable CO2, it's electrolysis technology is essential to the industry's effective decarbonization and achievement of net zero by 2050.
