Breedr Raises €23 Mn

UK-founded agri-tech platform Breedr has raised €23 million (US$27 million) in a Series B funding round. The company gives every cow a digital record that tracks its journey from birth to the supermarket.

SUMMARY

  • Breedr raised €23 million in a Series B funding round led by Partech’s impact fund.
  • The agri-tech startup tracks cattle data from birth to processing through a digital platform.
  • Breedr operates across the US, UK and Australia and has raised €39.9 million in total funding.

Breedr will use the new funding to bring more farmers and ranchers onto its platform and collect more information about cattle, including genomic data.

The funding round was led by Partech’s impact fund, with participation from Latitude, the growth-stage fund of LocalGlobe, and Outsiders Fund. The latest round brings Breedr’s total funding to €39.9 million (US$46.6 million).

Ian Wheal, founder and CEO of Breedr, says: “We built Breedr to bring value back to the people who raise the cattle. Demand for beef is climbing while the herd is the smallest it has been in 75 years. The industry has to get more value from every animal, and you cannot do that on paper.”

Arnaud Minvielle, General Partner at Partech, adds: “Beef is one of the most complex decarbonisation problems there is. Breedr cuts emissions while helping producers become more profitable. Ian and the Breedr team are building the transaction layer for one of the world’s largest unmodernised markets, earning revenue every time an animal changes hands.

“That alignment between the commercial engine and the environmental outcome is exactly what our impact fund exists to back. We truly believe that Ian, being an insider from this industry, and his team can fundamentally transform this value chain with data intelligence.”

Breedr was founded in 2018 in London by Ian Wheal. The company is now headquartered in Texas and operates in the US, UK and Australia.

Breedr combines a livestock management app, a verified cattle marketplace and a cattle financing service in one platform. It tracks information about individual animals from birth through processing.

Ian Wheal grew up on a cattle farm in Australia. His father helped build one of the country’s first cattle cooperatives. Ian later studied at London Business School and worked in consulting and technology before starting Breedr.
