SUMMARY

  • Berlin-based climatetech startup VREY has raised €3.3 million in seed funding, led by Rubio Impact Ventures with participation from High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) and Kopa Ventures.

VREY enables property owners to install solar systems in multi-family buildings and supply electricity directly to tenants without taking on the regulatory burden of becoming an energy supplier.

While nearly half of Europeans live in buildings with shared roofs solar adoption in this segment remains low. In Germany, fewer than 2% of multi-family rental units use on-site solar, largely due to regulatory complexity.

A new German framework “Gemeinschaftliche Gebäudeversorgung,” simplifies this model by removing supplier obligations for property owners. VREY’s platform is designed to operationalise this system at scale.

As a certified smart metering operator and billing partner VREY provides an integrated solution that measures each tenant’s share of solar energy and manages billing directly, removing operational complexity for landlords while enabling tenants to benefit without switching providers.

The company manages a three-digit number of projects across Germany and works with landlords, housing cooperatives, developers, and real estate firms. Its platform also supports integration of batteries, heat pumps, and EV charging infrastructure, positioning VREY as an “EnergyOS” for multi-family buildings.

With the newly secured funding, VREY plans to expand its team of around 20 employees and continue enhancing its platform capabilities.

The company aims to strengthen its position in the multi-family housing segment while unlocking additional energy use cases for property owners, further scaling its role in enabling distributed solar and integrated building energy management across Europe.

The majority of property owners want to future-proof their buildings, but until now, practical solutions were missing. With VREY, we make solar in multi-family buildings simple and economically viable for the first time,
says Julius Pahmeier, co-founder and Managing Director of VREY.
