Two Dutch companies, Battolyser Systems from Schiedam and VDL Hydrogen Systems from Eindhoven (part of VDL Groep), have decided to merge into a single company.

SUMMARY

  • Two Dutch companies, Battolyser Systems from Schiedam and VDL Hydrogen Systems from Eindhoven (part of VDL Groep), have decided to merge into a single company.

Their goal is to develop and offer a fully flexible pressurised alkaline electrolyser suited for large-scale industrial use. The new company will focus on developing and marketing this advanced technology, while VDL Groep will handle manufacturing.

Pilot projects with industrial clients are already underway, and full-scale demonstrations and commercial rollout are planned. The merger is set to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2025.

Both companies’ shareholders will invest equally in the merger and plan to support the company’s long-term growth. Key investors in Battolyser Systems include Innovation Industries, Global Cleantech Capital, Invest-NL and Koolen Industries.

The partnership aims to make green hydrogen more affordable and scalable. Their new electrolyser combines VDL’s strength in high-capacity systems with Battolyser’s expertise in flexible operation.

This innovative system is designed to produce low-cost hydrogen for industries like e-fuels, steelmaking and energy grids. Unlike traditional electrolysers that must run continuously, their solution can adjust to the fluctuating supply of renewable energy—producing hydrogen when wind power is available and pausing when it's not. Stored or imported hydrogen will keep the supply steady when needed.

Mattijs Slee, CEO of Battolyser Systems, says, “Our technologies are complementary to each other and together we can develop a better product that can be delivered at industrial scale to our customers with VDL Groep as manufacturing partner.”

Battolyser Systems stated that the merger plays a “critical role” in building a European value chain to support the energy transition and boost global exports.

Willem van der Leegte, President and CEO of VDL Groep, adds, “The combination of competences will result in a much stronger position to develop a state-of-the-art, ‘made in Europe’ electrolyser that will enable customers to produce competitive green hydrogen at a large scale. This is essential for the successful transition to a sustainable energy supply.”

VDL Groep, founded in 1953 and based in Brainport Eindhoven, is an international industrial family business comprising over 100 specialised companies. Active in high tech, mobility, energy, infratech, and foodtech, the group recorded a €4.3B turnover in 2024. It operates in 20 countries with 14,000+ employees, blending craftsmanship with innovation and sustainability.
