SUMMARY
- Waste to Energy Advanced Solutions (WtEnergy), a Barcelona-based company focused on converting waste and biomass into energy via gasification technologies, has secured €10 million in funding.
The round will support project execution, plant standardisation, organisational growth, new syngas applications, and European expansion.
The financing was led by SC Net Zero Ventures, Suma Capital’s Climate Tech fund, and included participation from Shell Ventures and existing shareholder Cemex Ventures.
WtEnergy was founded in 2017 by Ponce, with Antonio Crous joining as co-founder in 2019 to scale the business commercially and drive technology implementation across strategic industries and sectors.

The company highlights that European industry faces the dual challenge of cutting emissions in energy intensive processes while managing rising volumes of industrial waste. WtEnergy addresses this by developing and operating its own gasification technology, converting waste and biomass into syngas. This circular process gas can replace fossil fuels in industrial processes or be further processed into hydrogen, methanol, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
WtEnergy’s modular plants, ranging from 5–50 MW, are designed for direct integration into industrial facilities. The company says this approach helps clients reduce energy costs, lower CO₂ emissions, and advance circular economy goals by recovering waste that would otherwise be sent to landfills or incinerators.
“This financing round represents a key milestone for Waste to Energy Advanced Solutions. It supports the accelerated deployment of our technology at an industrial scale, while helping our customers recover energy from their waste, turning it into a competitive source of alternative energy and new low-carbon molecules. Having partners such as Shell Ventures, Cemex Ventures and Suma Capital strengthens our vision and encourages us to take the next step in our growth,” said Andrés Ponce, CEO of WtEnergy.
WtEnergy currently targets key sectors for industrial decarbonisation, including cement, paper, rendering, chemicals, and ceramics, with projects already operating or in advanced development.
The new funding will help WtEnergy expand its industrial waste and biomass energy recovery solutions across Spain and Europe, enabling companies to cut emissions, lower energy costs and adopt more sustainable production practices.
As per the company, its thermochemical conversion process is based on the transformation of solid fuels into clean and versatile synthesis gas via the atmospheric gasification process. “The process takes place in a bubbling fluidised bed gasifier, where fuel and fluidising agent react under autothermal reduction conditions to generate synthesis gas. This gas is then treated by the WtEnergy reforming process to remove all contaminants present on the residue,” WtEnergy stated on its website. The two key uses of clean syngas are power generation and thermal applications.
“We are very pleased to support Waste to Energy Advanced Solutions in this new phase of growth. Their technology, team and the industrial traction they have already demonstrated fit perfectly with our investment strategy in technological solutions with proven traction and strong scaling potential, enabling progress towards a more efficient, low-carbon industrial model,” said Natalia Ruiz, Partner at Suma Capital.
In 2023, the European Union granted Cemex and WtEnergy Advanced Solutions €4.4 million to implement an innovative waste-to-fuel technology using syngas at Cemex’s Alicante cement plant in Spain.
