SUMMARY
- AlphaLum, a Switzerland-based developer of advanced optics and sensing technologies for augmented reality, has closed a CHF 3.4 million seed round, led by Vsquared Ventures.
The funding will help AlphaLum accelerate its transition from advanced engineering to a core technology supplier for next-generation smart glasses and spatial computing establishing the company as a leading European provider of high-efficiency optical technologies.
Founded as a spin-out from ams OSRAM’s corporate incubator AlphaLum blends industrial optics expertise with a team experienced in scaling innovative photonic technologies.
Recent developments in the smart glasses market highlight both the growing momentum of AR and the structural bottlenecks limiting global scale. While flagship consumer products show strong demand so much that global rollouts are delayed due to constrained production inefficient optical designs and power-hungry sensing systems continue to restrict scalability.

With forecasts pointing to smart glasses and spatial computing as the next major computing shift, bridging the gap between demand and manufacturability has become a key challenge for the industry.
AlphaLum is tackling the key bottlenecks in AR hardware, enabling the shift from constrained pilot production to true mass manufacturing. By combining holographic optical combiners with ultra-low-power interferometric laser sensors AlphaLum addresses the low efficiency of transparent displays and the high power demands of vision-based sensing.
Its thin, invisible optical layer delivers over 10× higher optical efficiency than conventional waveguides while reducing system costs. Complemented by an AI-powered motion-sensing platform, the technology provides hands-free AR interaction and high-resolution, distortion-free visuals, unlocking the mass-market scalability that has so far remained out of reach and positioning Europe as a leader in the next computing platform.
Led by serial entrepreneur Markus Rossi, who previously exited Heptagon as CIO to ams AG in 2017 AlphaLum’s team brings rare end-to-end expertise across laser and optics physics, ASIC/electronics, and edge AI, combined with hands-on experience in designing pilot production lines and scaling processes with contract manufacturers.
"At AlphaLum, our goal is to make the next generation of smart glasses truly wearable – not as prototypes, but as scalable products. By solving the low efficiency of transparent display technologies and always-on constraints of vision-based sensing we enable our partners to bring interactive, everyday AR to market at scale. With this round, we are preparing the next phase of industrialization and strengthening our role as a core technology supplier for future smart glasses platforms." Markus Rossi CEO and Co-founder of AlphaLum
"AlphaLum is building foundational technology for one of the most important computing transitions ahead. Smart glasses are already a reality – the next step is to make them available at scale. AlphaLum is the player targeting the technological bottlenecks to enable this, and we are looking forward to partnering on this journey." Benedikt von Schoeler, General Partner at Vsquared Ventures
