London-based wills and legacy planning startup adeus has secured a £500,000 Smart Grant from Innovate UK to develop technology for the upcoming shift to electronic wills in England and Wales.

SUMMARY

  • London-based wills and legacy planning startup adeus has secured a £500,000 Smart Grant from Innovate UK to develop technology for the upcoming shift to electronic wills in England and Wales.

The funding will help adeus build tools that support the legalisation and rollout of digital wills, as the UK modernises its approach to legacy planning.

The funding was announced just days after the Law Commission released its Modernising Wills Law report on May 16, 2025.

The report recommends allowing electronic wills—a major update to the current law, which still requires handwritten signatures and paper documents under the Wills Act of 1837.

“Securing the Innovate UK Smart Grant is a major milestone for adeus and a strong endorsement of our vision,” said co-founder Nick Adams. “We believe the move to electronic wills is one of the most significant legal changes in a generation, and adeus is building the technology infrastructure to make it a reality.”

Although digital tools have changed many legal and financial services, will-writing in the UK still follows old 19th-century laws. Now, with the Law Commission supporting digital wills, startups like adeus are emerging.

Switching to electronic wills is expected to make will-writing easier to access and reduce mistakes that often cause problems or disputes. This change also fits with wider government and industry plans to make legal and civic processes digital.

adeus’s platform is already available in more than 15 countries, but its will-writing service currently works only in England and Wales.

The company aims to become a global provider of digital tools for legacy planning, a growing area in the legaltech and deathtech industries.

The legaltech market in the UK and Europe is growing steadily, as more people want legal services that are easier to access, cheaper, and simpler to use.

According to a 2024 Tech Nation report, legaltech investment in the UK topped £300 million last year, with wills and estate planning being one of the fastest-growing areas.

adeus is part of a small but growing group of startups like Farewill, FreeWill, and Tomorrow that are making legacy planning more digital. adeus stands out by focusing on legal compliance, document security, and the ability to grow internationally.

As laws around digital wills change, adeus’s early investment in building its technology could give it a head start. The Smart Grant will help the company improve its tech and make sure it follows the rules before any new laws are officially passed.
