SUMMARY

  • Wagestream, a leading company in workplace finance and wellbeing, has acquired pensions tech startup Zippen.

The move strengthens Wagestream’s goal of helping all workers improve their financial health and highlights how employers are playing a bigger role in offering financial services at work.

Zippen, founded in 2017, focused on defined contribution pensions and knows the UK pensions space well—where around £31.1 billion in pension assets are still unclaimed.

The deal matters because research shows lower and middle-income workers are most affected, holding twice as many unclaimed pensions as the average UK worker.

This also shows a big change in how workers get financial support—moving away from traditional banks to services directly offered by employers, like flexible pay, savings, loans, and pension support.

Peter Briffett, CEO & co-founder of Wagestream, comments: We are in the midst of an evolution in the way financial support is provided to workers. Thousands of employers are realising that holistic financial wellbeing - from today’s pay to long-term planning - isn’t just a perk, but a driver of engagement, loyalty and productivity.

With Zippen joining the Wagestream Group, we are strengthening our expertise and furthering our mission to help people take control of their financial lives.

Zippen’s co-founders, Stuart Feast and Ellie Tembras, will join the Wagestream Group.

Stuart Feast, co-founder of Zippen, adds: We are so excited to be joining the Wagestream team. We have spent the last eight years building deep knowledge of the pensions ecosystem and we look forward to sharing that with a mission-led business that already reaches millions of workers globally.

The acquisition fits into Wagestream’s bigger plan to build the most complete platform for workplace finance and wellbeing.

As UK pensions continue to change, Wagestream is in a great position to help workers with long-term money challenges by using payroll connections, trusted employer relationships, and its own employee data.
