Vizgard, an AI software startup in London, has raised £1.5 million in a funding round that saw more interest than expected.

Vizgard, an AI software startup in London, has raised £1.5 million in a funding round that saw more interest than expected. The round was led by AI-focused venture capital firm Sure Valley Ventures (SVV), with support from Midwich Ignite and Focal.

The money will help the company grow its engineering team, expand its business, and set up international distribution to speed up its growth.

Vizgard, founded in early 2021 by former Royal Navy submariner Alex Kehoe, focuses on AI automation for the defence sector. The company aims to meet the growing need for AI-powered solutions as current systems struggle to keep up with increasing demands.

A recent report from the UK’s Defence Committee highlighted a gap between the UK's plans for defence AI and its actual use, and Vizgard aims to help bridge that gap. The company automates critical security and defence systems.

Vizgard has secured important contracts with the Ministry of Defence, HMGCC Co-Creation, top defence technology companies, and a major UK transport organisation. Its clients include Sesanti, a leading British camera maker, and several national police departments. The company is also part of a £12 million Innovate UK project to develop a 165-mile drone superhighway.

The UK Home Office recently gave Vizgard a major contract to create a portable knife-detection solution using its technology, FortifAI. FortifAI combines traditional computer vision with advanced deep learning models to perform well in real-world situations.

The platform also includes a special algorithm called the Behaviour Risk Index. This algorithm calculates a danger score that is easy to understand and automatically blurs faces to protect privacy. This innovation allows for automatic alerts in situations that were previously not addressed, such as identifying and responding to vulnerable people being attacked or at risk of self-harm.

Alex Kehoe, Founder of Vizgard said: “The UK has all the ingredients to lead the world in defence AI, but the pace of transitioning from Proof of Concept to deployment is lagging. From the beginning, we focused on developing AI that could deliver the most immediate impact – operating at the edge, within or near moving cameras. Whether on land, in the air, or at sea, this approach ensures systems can react faster, act independently if GPS or communication is lost, and even act collaboratively to provide more actionable feedback. We’re excited to welcome our new investors onboard who are aligned with our mission to fully automate the cameras that protect us, while maintaining public privacy.”

Brian Kinane, Founding Partner, Sure Valley Ventures “Vizgard is tackling the growing need for time-critical visual intelligence and precision camera automation in security and defence solutions. Their technology addresses important AI reliability concerns through a robust ‘systems approach’, identifying threats that would have been missed and allowing stronger performance in new environments. With the rapidly growing demand for AI in Defence and Security, and the team’s deep domain expertise, we believe Vizgard has the potential to become a global leader in AI vision automation.”
