SUMMARY

  • Medtech startup Veltist has raised €160,000 (CHF 150,000) to develop AnastoSEAL, an advanced surgical patch designed to prevent digestive leaks after surgery — a serious complication that leads to thousands of deaths and high healthcare costs each year.

It combines strong adhesion with imaging features that help doctors spot leaks early using regular hospital scans.

Every year, over 14 million abdominal surgeries are done worldwide, and more than 10% result in leaks.

These leaks can lead to infections, more surgeries, longer hospital stays, and even death in up to 33% of cases.

Post-surgery leaks often appear days after the operation, as current sealants struggle to stick in harsh digestive environments and don’t give early warnings—leaving surgeons unaware until complications arise.

Veltist is led by Dr. Alexandre Anthis, a researcher at ETH Zurich and co-inventor of the technology. He has spent over seven years developing it with top visceral surgeons.

Veltist’s AnastoSEAL is a smart surgical patch that sticks well and includes imaging features visible on standard ultrasound and CT scans—offering both sealing and real-time feedback, which makes it stand out from existing options.

Built on a flexible platform that combines implant and adhesive tech, it adapts to surgical conditions and gives surgeons valuable healing insights.

A spin-out from ETH Zurich and Empa, Veltist will use funding from Venture Kick to support testing and move toward regulatory approval.

“Venture Kick offered us the agility and flexibility to access critical expertise early on—an advantage in building high-value collaborations,” highlighted Veltist’s founder and CEO Alexandre Anthis.

“The Veltist team is grateful to the entire Venture Kick team.”
