UniverCell Raises €30M Series B To Boost European lithium-ion Cell Production

The round was co-led by DeepTech & Climate Fonds (DTCF), IKA, and WIKA, with strong backing from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Fund.

Founded in 2019 in Kiel, Germany, UniverCell has grown into an industrial-scale battery manufacturer with over 82 employees. Its gigafactory in Northern Germany has production capacity exceeding 1.5 GWh, focusing on custom lithium-ion cells and electrodes for high-performance applications, including satellites, space systems and critical care medical devices.

UniverCell’s competitive edge comes from its expertise in industrial production processes, especially electrode manufacturing and cell assembly.

The company produces 21700 cylindrical cells with tabless designs, lightweight aluminum housings, and process-stable formation, all developed in-house. This approach ensures high reproducibility, low scrap rates, and fast changeover times for customer-specific projects.

The new capital will be used to scale production capacity, further advance UniverCell’s proprietary electrode and cell technologies, and strengthen competitive, sustainable battery cell manufacturing in Europe.
