- Oxford-based QFX, a University of Oxford spin-out, secured €2.2 million in Seed funding to build modular hardware for quantum technologies, including computing, sensing, and secure communications. The round was led by Y Combinator co-founder Paul Graham.
“With strong investor backing and a leadership team rooted in deep technical and commercial expertise,” said Dr Timothy Ballance, CEO of QFX, “I am thrilled to be leading QFX, delivering quantum hardware which will enable the next generation of quantum systems.”
Oxford-based QFX, a University of Oxford spin-out founded by Dr. Joe Goodwin, Dr. Laurent Stephenson, and Dr. Peter Drmota, has raised €2.2 million in a Seed round to advance modular hardware for quantum technologies.
The investment positions QFX within Europe’s 2025 surge in quantum hardware innovation, complementing larger funding rounds such as QuantWare’s €20 million for superconducting chips, QuiX Quantum’s €15 million for photonic quantum computing, Sweden’s FirstQFM AB €1.2 million pre-Seed and the UK’s Phasecraft €29 million for quantum-algorithm platforms.

Founded in 2024 and headquartered at Begbroke Science Park, QFX already offers a commercially available compact atomic source, reflecting its modular scalable approach to quantum computing, navigation and secure communications. Its focus on cross-platform integration aligns with the broader “DeepTech moment” shaping Europe’s quantum and photonics landscape.
The Seed funding will accelerate development of QFX’s foundational hardware and expand its operations. Strategic executive hires include Dr. Timothy Ballance, formerly President – UK at Infleqtion, as CEO and Sadie Mansell, also from Infleqtion, as COO. Together, they bring deep expertise in networked trapped ion systems, operational scaling, and commercialising quantum technologies.
With growing national interest in quantum defence, navigation, and encryption, QFX aims to provide the modular hardware backbone for Europe’s next-generation quantum infrastructure.
