SUMMARY

  • Uber is set to acquire the domestic delivery business of Turkish grocery startup Getir from its controlling shareholder, aiming to strengthen its presence in Turkey.

Once a leading success in the country’s startup ecosystem, Getir’s delivery operations will now operate under Uber.

Under the deal, Uber will pay $335 million upfront to acquire Getir’s food delivery business. Additionally, Uber will invest $100 million for a 15% stake in Getir’s grocery, retail, and water delivery operations, with plans to fully acquire the division over the coming years.

The acquisition will integrate Getir with Uber’s Trendyol Go platform, in which Uber holds a majority stake.

Batuhan Gultakan, CEO of Getir, said: “This agreement is a significant milestone for Getir and is a testament to the strong operating model and leading brand our team has built in our home market of Türkiye.

“We are excited to bring Getir’s pioneering ultrafast delivery expertise to Uber’s global ecosystem, as we continue to enhance the experience for consumers, couriers, restaurants and retailers. We are proud of what we have achieved with the support of Mubadala and look forward to the next chapter of growth as part of the Uber family.”

After completion, Getir users can continue using their app while accessing Trendyol Go’s restaurant network, and Trendyol Go users will gain access to Getir services. The deal is expected to close in the coming years, subject to performance conditions.

Founded in 2015 in Istanbul, Getir gained recognition for promising grocery deliveries within minutes. The rapid grocery sector boomed during the pandemic, and Getir reached a $11.8 billion valuation in 2022.

Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, said: “By bringing together these leading platforms, we aim to support the continued growth of a vibrant and competitive ecosystem that delivers even more value for consumers, couriers, and merchants.’’

Since then, the company has exited several international markets, including Italy and the UK, to concentrate on its core operations in Turkey.

Uber said the deal represents “another milestone" in its investment in Turkey. It follows Uber's purchase of a $700m controlling stake in Turkish food and grocery app, Trendyol Go, last year, as it looks to up its presence in Turkey and in the Middle East.
