SUMMARY

  • Former Swedish foreign minister Tobias Billström has joined defence tech startup Nordic Air Defence (NAD) as Director of Strategy and Government Affairs his first full-time role since stepping back from frontline politics last year.

Nordic Air Defence, headquartered in Stockholm, develops advanced defensive technologies for both civilian and military applications. The company combines hardware and software expertise across electronics, mechanical design, embedded systems, software engineering, and AI.

Its team includes veterans from leading organisations such as Anduril, Palantir, Teledyne FLIR, Kratos, FOI (the Swedish Defence Research Agency), Acast, Zipline, SAAB, and Quantum Systems.

During a political career spanning three decades, Billström held several senior offices, including Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Migration, as well as major parliamentary positions such as Parliamentary Group Leader of the Moderate Party and First Deputy Speaker. At NAD, he will continue his commitment to public service by advocating for a stronger and safer Europe amid rising security threats.

Billström will lead NAD’s engagement with governments, defence ministries, and security organisations, drawing on his diplomatic experience to support the company’s mission. He will also work across the organisation and play an operational role in broader company initiatives.

As Europe intensifies efforts to secure borders and protect critical infrastructure, NAD’s flagship technology the Kreuger 100XR, a high-speed kinetic interceptor with an optional warhead has emerged as a leading solution to the growing threat of drone warfare. Modern drone capabilities have demonstrated their ability to destabilise entire regions, causing loss of life and significant strategic and logistical challenges, further heightening geopolitical tensions.

Made in Sweden and patent-pending, the Kreuger 100XR is a high-speed kinetic interceptor with an optional warhead, engineered for maximum flexibility and performance. Its fixed-wing design provides a 5+ km intercept range with high manoeuvrability, while future versions plan to extend range and feature foldable wings.

The interceptor’s embedded AI enables “fire-and-forget” operation, autonomously detecting, classifying, and tracking targets, with continuous ground control available in radio frequency-stable environments. An integrated thermal infrared seeker allows the system to operate in fully autonomous, radio-silent mode when necessary.

The K100XR’s stackable form factor ensures seamless integration across multiple platforms and vessels. Its versatile launch system supports deployment from the ground, handheld units, vehicles, boats, and airborne platforms.

By replacing much of the traditional hardware with software, the Kreuger 100XR is roughly ten times cheaper per unit than conventional anti-drone systems, enabling mass production and allowing customers to scale interceptor arsenals efficiently. Battery-powered and lightweight, it offers exceptional portability and rapid deployment capability.

According to NAD Director of Strategy and Government Affairs Tobias Billström:

“I am energised to start at Nordic Air Defence. From when I first met the senior team and discussed the prospect of joining, I instantly had a deep alignment with the company mission.

Our Swedish ethos of Total Defence that by mobilising all of society, contributing in their own way, national security can be achieved are central to NAD’s founding principles."

Nordic Air Defence CEO Karl Rosander shared: “We are delighted to welcome Tobias to Nordic Air Defence. His knowledge and appreciation of the global political and defence landscapes will complement our mission to contribute to a safer and more stable world.

His experience is unrivalled, and we share a great sense of purpose and public service. Tobias will enable NAD to cut through the noise and deliver our life-saving technology to our allies.”
