Gothenburg-based biotech startup Seaqure Labs has raised €470K in a pre-seed funding round to advance the development and scaling of its mycelium-based feed ingredients.

SUMMARY

  • Gothenburg-based biotech startup Seaqure Labs has raised €470K in a pre-seed funding round to advance the development and scaling of its mycelium-based feed ingredients.

Investors in the round include Chalmers Ventures, Almi Väst, VASTAF (Västkustens Affärsänglar), Propel Capital, SLU Holding AB, and other angel investors.

The funds will support Seaqure Labs’ mission to deliver circular ingredients for aquaculture, contributing to sustainable solutions for global food production challenges.

Founded in 2023 by Johan Henriksson, Sajjad Karimi, and Albin Frick, Seaqure Labs is a biotech startup creating sustainable aquaculture feed using mycelium. Mycelium, the network of fungal threads, is a high-protein, environmentally friendly alternative to traditional livestock. It requires less water and land while producing lower carbon emissions, helping meet global protein demand sustainably.

Seaqure Labs follows circular economy principles, producing feed from industrial sidestreams to reduce reliance on soymeal and animal protein. Their feed reportedly cuts carbon emissions by at least 50%, uses six times less water, and requires five times less land per kilogram compared to soymeal.

The feed offers a balanced amino acid profile, beta-glucan, and essential minerals. Laboratory and pilot studies show high digestibility in fish and potential prebiotic benefits, which may improve yields. The production process is flexible, allowing the company to upcycle various sidestreams in partnership with industry collaborators, creating sustainable, scalable solutions for aquaculture.

Seaqure Labs transforms food waste into high-value feed ingredients using a mycelium-based fermentation process. Their technology enables mycelium production close to feed manufacturing sites and sources of industrial sidestreams.

The company leverages agrifood sidestreams across Europe, growing fungi in controlled fermentation chambers to produce a dried ingredient rich in protein and nutrients. The mycelium strains used are FDA-approved and classified as GRAS for human consumption.

Seaqure Labs’ technology can create diverse mycelium-based ingredients for aquaculture, pet, and livestock feed. Trials for Rainbow trout have been completed, with ongoing trials for poultry. The process employs solid-state fermentation, a method rooted in traditional fermentation practices, adapted to fungi using strains already safely consumed by humans.
