SUMMARY

  • Estonian-Dutch deeptech startup Spiral Hydrogen has raised €2.7 million in pre-seed funding, along with €0.7 million in grants, to develop its bubble-free electrolysis technology.

The round was backed by byFounders, Norrsken Evolve, and Superangel.

Founded by Juri Volodin and Fedor Stomakhin, the company brings together expertise in electrochemistry, energy systems, and software engineering.

Spiral Hydrogen is building a rotating, bubble-free electrolyser aimed at improving green hydrogen production efficiency. Traditional systems lose energy due to gas bubbles forming on electrodes, reducing performance.

The startup’s design channels gases through a porous electrode into a separate pathway, targeting efficiency levels above 90% while reducing hydrogen production costs.

The new funding will help Spiral Hydrogen move from lab-stage development to pilot deployment. The company plans to construct its first pilot electrolyser at the Port of Rotterdam in collaboration with SwitcH2, with completion targeted within the next two years. The pilot will test the technology under real industrial conditions and guide the design of its first commercial system.

By improving efficiency and lowering both capital and operating costs, Spiral Hydrogen aims to make green hydrogen more cost-competitive with fossil fuel–based alternatives, supporting decarbonisation in industries such as refining, fertilisers, steel production and heavy transport.

Our technology solves one of the industry’s most persistent challenges - gas bubbles - and enables efficiency levels that could make green hydrogen commercially viable at scale, said Juri Volodin, founder and CEO of Spiral Hydrogen.

About Spiral Hydrogen

Spiral Hydrogen, founded in 2024, is developing next-generation electrolyzers to make green hydrogen cheaper than fossil-based hydrogen. Its alkaline-based system eliminates gas bubbles, improves efficiency up to 95%, and uses rotation for electrolyte flow. The simplified design enables higher performance, lower stack costs, longer lifetime and industrial-scale current densities.
