SUMMARY

  • London-based biomaterials startup Shellworks has raised $15 million in a Series A round led by Paris impact fund alter equity, with participation from Nat Friedman (NFDG), JamJar, and existing investors Founder Collective, LocalGlobe, and Third Sphere.

Founded in 2019, Shellworks develops Vivomer, a bio-based material offering a sustainable, cost-competitive alternative to conventional plastics.

The funding comes as Shellworks demonstrates that Vivomer can match the cost of traditional materials like aluminium and glass, supporting brands in transitioning away from petroleum-based packaging at scale.

Vivomer is produced by fermenting second-generation feedstocks, like used cooking oil, with microbes. It performs like conventional plastic during use but biodegrades after disposal.

The new funding will support Shellworks’ expansion into the US and EU, targeting the wellness sector. The company plans regional production to cut carbon footprints, strengthen supply chains and build a global network using technologies such as blow moulding, with facilities across the UK, Europe, and the US.

Insiya Jafferjee, CEO and co-founder of Shellworks, said sustainable materials have long been viewed as too costly for widespread adoption.

We're proving that's no longer true. At just a fraction of plastic's scale, we're already cost-competitive with alternatives like glass and aluminum. As we scale further, we'll only get more competitive.
