Rocsys Unveils World’s First hands-free EV Charging Platform for Autonomous Mobility
Apr 28, 2025 | By Kailee Rainse

Rocsys is a company that makes hands-free charging for electric vehicles, has just launched the world’s first all-in-one system that lets self-driving vehicles charge themselves anytime, day or night, without human help.
Bouman has worked in the electric vehicle (EV) industry for about 20 years. After finishing his studies at Delft, he started Epyon, the first fast-charging company for EVs in Europe. It was later bought by ABB and became the ABB Charging Group.
After the company was sold, Bouman stayed on to help grow it into a global business. In his last year at ABB Charging Group, he visited a robotics startup in San Francisco. There, he saw self-driving cars moving around and parking themselves on an indoor test track.
“I was completely awestruck seeing autonomous vehicles for the first time, but I wondered, 'Why don't you automate that too?'

Cars are becoming driverless, but the systems around them are still made for people. This creates a big problem.
Most charging stations today are designed with the idea that a person will always be there to plug in the vehicle. But manual charging takes time, needs people to do the work, can lead to mistakes, and doesn’t work well when you have a lot of self-driving cars.
Having a person charge the car slows everything down and takes away the benefits of using autonomous vehicles.
Bouman believes that if we want a future with driverless cars, we also need to build charging systems that work without people.
“We fill that gap, and the first application is charging. We use a combination of robotics, AI, computer vision, and software. It's a hardware-enabled software business — the hardware is important, but it’s all about computer vision, AI, and controls. People sometimes call it 'embodied AI' or 'physical AI.'”
The Rocsys Platform is made for around-the-clock use, especially in tough places like ports, where charging by hand can slow things down.
It keeps vehicles charged, connected, and ready to go whenever they’re needed. This helps big companies—like those running ports, delivery services, or robotaxis—work more efficiently, safely, and at a larger scale.
Bouman detailed:
“Passenger cars are more of a 'nice-to-have' use case — it's not critical. In professional fleets, though, automation is a 'must-have.' So we focus on real, painful problems in professional settings.
We basically ensure the vehicle is correctly connected to a normal charger. So the charging speed depends on the charger itself."
Rocsys makes fast charging automatic — it can handle super quick charges, like 400kW in just 10 minutes. This is a big advantage over wireless charging, which is usually slower.
Further, reliability is also critical. According to Bouman:
“In fleet environments, if someone forgets to plug in or damages a connector, it costs real money. A vehicle not charged on time in a port, for example, can be extremely costly."
Rocsys works with customers in areas like robotaxis, shipping, and ports. Their partners include big names like APM Terminals MVII (the world’s second-largest port operator), self-driving tech companies like EasyMile and embotech, and vehicle makers like Hyster, DAF, and Autocar.
