Icelandic startup Prescriby raises €2 million in funding to innovate at the root of the opioid crisis. With opioid-related mortality in the US, Canada, and EU hitting all-time highs, there is more emphasis being placed on the vital need for preventive measures in the management of prescription opioids.

It emphasises early intervention over addiction treatment, in contrast to standard techniques. By radically changing the way addictive drugs are supplied and maintained, their strategy seeks to stop addiction before it ever arises.

Lead investors in the funding round include the Nordic venture capital company Crowberry Capital, with participation from investors in Canada, Denmark, and Iceland.

Hekla Arnardóttir, a partner at Crowberry Capital, highlighted: “Prescriby is tackling a significant and serious issue with a solution that can prevent addiction from developing in the first place. Most competitors focus on treating addiction, but Prescriby aims to stop it before it starts.”

It markets itself as the link between the first prescription and possible addiction treatment, serving as a vital component in patient care. The software developed by the business facilitates safer management of initial prescriptions for necessary opioids and provides physicians with additional avenues for treating patients who develop physical tolerance and dependency.

Dr. Kjartan Thorsson, CEO and co-founder of Prescriby said, brings firsthand experience from his time at the University Hospital of Iceland. “I was discharging about 30 patients on prescription opioids every week, and roughly one in ten developed some level of addiction. It became apparent that prescribers lacked the tools to offer safer treatments from the start, which is essential for reducing harm from the opioid crisis,”
