German e-mobility startup Pionix has secured over €8 million in funding to expand its open-source solutions for the global e-mobility market.

SUMMARY

  • German e-mobility startup Pionix has secured over €8 million in funding to expand its open-source solutions for the global e-mobility market.

The late seed round was led by Ascend Capital Partners and included participation from Start-up BW Seed Fonds (managed by MBG Baden-Württemberg), Pale Blue Dot, Vireo Ventures, Axeleo Ventures, and others.

Despite rapid growth in e-mobility, EV charging remains fragmented. Many hardware and software providers use proprietary, closed systems that struggle to communicate with each other. This lack of interoperability has led to reliability issues, inefficient infrastructure maintenance and charging session errors reaching up to 25%.

Founded in 2021 Pionix develops products that create a shared software foundation for EV charging technologies, aiming to improve reliability, interoperability, and long-term compatibility. The company spearheaded EVerest, an open-source platform enabling charger makers, operators, automakers, and fleets to reduce compatibility issues and accelerate innovation in the EV charging ecosystem.

EVerest has become a leading open-source cleantech initiative, with support from roughly 600 contributors across more than 70 organizations, powering hundreds of thousands of chargers globally. Pionix CEO Marco Möller highlighted that reliability is key to the e-mobility transition and open-source solutions provide a sustainable path to address system incompatibilities and high error rates.

With EVerest at the core and our Pionix Cloud services and ChargeBridge hardware on top, we make it radically simpler to build, integrate and operate chargers that just work - every time. That’s what the industry needs to deliver a transition that sticks.

Pionix will use the new funding to tackle fragmentation in the EV charging sector by developing open, modular enterprise products for both software and hardware. The company also aims to expand the EVerest open-source ecosystem, collaborating with its global community to drive innovation and support future initiatives in EV charging development.
