SUMMARY

  • New Dawn Bio, a deeptech startup developing what it calls the world’s first cultured wood, has raised €2.1 million in an oversubscribed pre-seed round led by CapitalT, with participation from Norrsken Evolve, Ontdekkers Group, and angel investors including Jelle Prins.

Founded in 2024, the company is rethinking how wood is produced by growing it from plant stem cells in bioreactors instead of harvesting trees.

This method allows wood to be shaped during growth, removing the need for logging and enabling production up to 10,000 times faster than traditional forestry.

The technology aims to reduce environmental impact by limiting deforestation and cutting significant CO₂ emissions linked to conventional timber production while also reducing material waste and manufacturing costs.

New Dawn Bio combines cell biology materials science, engineering and AI to develop scalable tunable wood materials. The new funding will support further R&D and team expansion as the company advances its cultured wood platform.

Tom Clement, co-founder and CEO of New Dawn Bio, said the wood industry still relies on a centuries-old process of shaping rectangular boards and beams from round tree trunks:

For the first time in history, we can grow premium wood directly into its final shape. This funding allows us to advance our technology and bring a practical product to market.
