SUMMARY

  • Zurich-based aviation technology company Metafuels, which develops proprietary sustainable fuel solutions, has received grant funding from the Dutch government to support its e-SAF project in Rotterdam.

Its Dutch subsidiary, Metafuels Nederland B.V., secured a €1.92 million grant from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) under the TSE Industry Studies Hydrogen & Green Chemistry programme (GroenvermogenNL).

The funding will support development of its Turbe synthetic sustainable aviation fuel project at the Port of Rotterdam.

Founded in 2021 by Kapoor, Leigh Hackett, and Ulrich Koss, Metafuels believes sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is the most effective path to decarbonising aviation. Its proprietary aerobrew technology converts renewable methanol into jet fuel with high carbon efficiency and is compatible with existing aircraft and airport infrastructure.

Unlike conventional SAF routes that rely on limited feedstocks such as waste oils, Metafuels’ methanol-based e-SAF offers a scalable alternative. When produced using renewable electricity, green hydrogen and captured carbon, it can cut lifecycle emissions by up to 90% compared to fossil kerosene.

The company says the Netherlands grant marks a key milestone as it moves from development to commercial-scale deployment. The funding will support activities up to final investment decision (FID), including engineering design, permitting, and commercial development.

Metafuels Nederland B.V., the Dutch subsidiary of Metafuels, is developing the Turbe project, which will serve as the company’s first commercial deployment of its aerobrew technology and a blueprint for future large-scale facilities. The project aims to begin production from 2030, in line with e-SAF sub-mandates under ReFuelEU Aviation.

Located at Evos Rotterdam, the site benefits from existing methanol infrastructure, multimodal logistics access, and a skilled industrial workforce.

Recent milestones include a €20.7 million ($24 million) funding round led by UVC Partners, a FEED contract awarded to McDermott in December 2025 and the installation of its methanol-to-jet demonstration plant at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland which is now preparing for operation. The company is also expanding its European footprint with projects in the Netherlands and Denmark.

“Securing this support from RVO is a strong validation of both our technology and our approach to scaling e-SAF production, and the merits of the Turbe project. Rotterdam is one of Europe’s most important energy and industrial hubs, and an ideal location to deliver large-scale synthetic fuel projects. This grant enables us to accelerate Turbe towards FID and make commercial e-SAF production in Europe a reality,” said Saurabh Kapoor, Chief Executive Officer of Metafuels.
