Aug 7, 2024 | By Team SR
Computing startup LightSolver has been selected for the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator Program. The EIC Fund will provide the company with an initial grant of €2.5 million and a future equity investment of €10 million, for a total of €12.5 million. With this honor, LightSolver joins 68 other businesses who were selected from a very tough field of 969 candidates.
SUMMARY
- Computing startup LightSolver has been selected for the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator Program.
- LightSolver is the creator of the first pure laser-based processing unit (LPU), a new computing paradigm that is poised to outpace and outperform quantum and supercomputers.
The first all-optical supercomputer, which uses less energy than traditional computers, will get funding in an effort to lower the Total Cost of Computing (TCoC) and the industrial carbon footprint. The business will make use of the resources provided by the EIC to further the platform's commercialization and quicken its rise within the high-performance computing (HPC) industry.
The Laser Processing UnitTM (LPU), a processor from LightSolver, uses light's inherent qualities to carry out intricate mathematical operations, allowing business and academia to quickly and effectively handle tasks requiring a lot of computation. The workloads that LightSolver's platform can significantly speed include computer-assisted engineering (CAE), bioscience computations, and intractable optimization problems.

LightSolver CEO and co-founder Ruti Ben-Shlomi, Ph.D said, “We’re humbled to join the rows of trailblazing startups in fields such as sustainability, MedTech, and space technology that have received funding from the EIC, The amount of energy consumed by computing globally has been growing exponentially and is becoming unsustainable, hence the need for a new computing paradigm. Our laser-based processor can tackle large and complex computations faster than GPUs. It is also much less environmentally demanding than quantum computers, requiring no vacuum or ultracold temperatures which means that it can live in a data center.”
In order to assist researchers, small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), and high-potential startups in creating and growing game-changing ideas, the European Commission launched the European Innovation Council (EIC). The European Innovation Council (EIC) was established with the goal of advancing Europe's leadership in new technologies and innovation. Its investments will be made in the most promising creative initiatives in a range of industries, such as computing, energy, communications, pharmaceuticals, and medical.
