SUMMARY
- IVFmicro, a University of Leeds spinout focused on improving IVF outcomes by enhancing embryo quality and quantity per cycle, has raised £3.5 million in pre-seed funding.
The round was led by Northern Gritstone and supported by the Innovate UK Investor Partnerships Programme.
Globally, 1 in 6 couples experience fertility challenges, with IVF success rates of 25–30% for women under 35. Limitations such as repeated embryo handling, subjective selection, and reliance on skilled operators increase complexity and cost.
In the UK, a single IVF cycle costs about £5,000, and NHS access is constrained by long waits and strict eligibility criteria.

IVFmicro has created a microfluidic device for embryo culture and handling using minimal nutrient-rich fluid, designed for any IVF cycle.
The device aims to increase viable embryos and improve implantation and pregnancy rates, showing a 10–15% improvement in embryo quality and quantity. Co-founder Helen Picton emphasizes applying reproductive biology research to enhance patient outcomes.
Our goal is to make IVF more effective, more predictable, and ultimately more hopeful for those striving to start a family.
IVFmicro plans to use the funding to advance its verification and validation phase, preparing for upcoming trials involving human embryos in fertility clinics.
