SUMMARY

  • Italy-based IdentifAI, a fast-growing startup fighting AI-generated disinformation, has raised €5 million in funding led by United Ventures.

This comes just months after a €2.2 million seed round. The new funds will support its global expansion into Europe and the US, and further develop its deepfake detection tech.

Founded by cybersecurity experts Marco Ramilli and Marco Castaldo, IdentifAI’s AI platform can accurately detect if content—like images, videos, or voice recordings—is AI-generated or real.

Marco Castaldo, co-founder of IdentifAI explained: We’ve built a system that evolves in real time, allowing us to respond rapidly as new generative models enter the market. With AI’s exponential growth, we’re working against the clock, and this new funding round couldn't come at a better time. Our background in cybersecurity is a key differentiator, because it means we understand the inherent danger of a tech, or risks associated with potential deviant uses of it.

IdentifAI’s mission, summed up in its motto We Stand For Truth, is to protect genuine human expression and help people navigate a digital world where it's harder to tell what’s real and what’s AI-generated.

From the very beginning, our goal has been to build a global company — because truth is a universal value, and it needs to be protected on a global scale, added founder Marco Ramilli.

As generative AI becomes a key part of digital systems, the need for tools like IdentifAI is growing quickly. According to UNCTAD, the global AI market could grow from $189 billion in 2023 to $4.8 trillion by 2033. Its share in frontier tech is also set to rise from 7% to 29%.

People are also becoming more concerned. A Deloitte study found that 70% of those aware of generative AI worry it could be used to mislead. About 60% struggle to tell AI-made content from real content, and 84% believe AI-generated media should be clearly labeled.

Massimiliano Magrini, Managing Partner and co-founder of United Ventures, commented: IdentifAI is building technology to address one of the most pressing challenges created by the rapid advancement of AI itself: distinguishing what’s real from what’s not. This is a foundational issue for the future of AI.

The team has demonstrated exceptional vision, execution, and international ambition — positioning IdentifAI as one of Europe’s most promising players in the fight against disinformation.

The new funding will help IdentifAI expand into major European and US markets, where it already has a strong team of AI and security experts. It will also boost R&D to further improve the accuracy and performance of its deepfake detection technology.
