SUMMARY

  • Imec, a global R&D centre, has secures €2.5 billion in funding.
  • This round is use to establish a new R&D pilot line for advanced chip technology and systems-on-chip.

Imec is the world's largest independent research centre for digital technology and nanoelectronics. The NanoIC pilot line is a component of the EU Chips Act's vision to enhance the European chip industry's ecosystem, stimulate economic development, and accelerate innovation in Europe.

The EU Chips Act is centred on four strategic pilot lines that are dispersed across multiple European member states. Its objectives are to facilitate collaboration, support economic development and strategic autonomy in Europe, and bridge the gap between technological research and product.

Healthcare manufacturers and European OEMs will have the opportunity to evaluate emerging innovations, including chiplets. Imec will contribute to the pilot lines for low-power FD-SOI (fully-depleted silicon-on-insulator chip technology, hosted by CEA-Leti, France) and heterogeneous system integration (hosted by Fraunhofer, Germany) and host the sub-2-nanometer pilot line at the same time.

Imec will establish a distinctive pilot line that will enable companies to investigate the potential of the most advanced semiconductor technology for their future applications through collaboration with European and global device manufacturers and suppliers.

A combination of public and private contributions will be used to raise the anticipated investment. Contributions from the Flemish government and numerous EU financing programmes (e.g., Horizon Europe and Digital Europe) through the Chips Joint Undertaking will total €1.4 billion in public funding.

Luc Van den hove, CEO of imec: “Thanks to the support of the EU, the Flemish government and industry partners such as ASML, we can not only continue to play a pioneering role in the development of the most advanced chips, but also respond better to market demand. The fact that imec is given a central role in the EU Chips Act to strengthen the European industry confirms that we are on the right path. With Flanders Technology and Innovation, I am building on that vision to safeguard our Flemish prosperity in the future. We make Flanders a model nation that uses technology for our benefit.”
