SUMMARY

  • Volta Greentech, a Gothenburg-based biotech startup addressing global warming by reducing methane emissions from cows, has raised nearly €1.7 million (18 million SEK) to support the market launch of its methane-reducing feed additive, Lome.

Led by Axel Johnson, this funding round brings the company’s total capital raised to over €9.5 million (100 million SEK) since its founding.

Founded in 2019 Volta Greentech creates feed additives that gently target methane-producing microbes in the rumen, cutting emissions at the source while preserving feed energy.

The company’s innovations aim to address one of agriculture’s biggest climate challenges, helping farmers reduce emissions at a cost per tonne of CO₂ that is highly competitive across industries.

Their product Lome represents the next stage of development. By mimicking algae’s methane-reducing properties rather than relying on large-scale algae cultivation, Lome is more precise, reliable, and resource-efficient, with a scalable production process. The company is now finalizing its EU regulatory application for a broad European market launch.

With the new funding, Volta Greentech plans to advance R&D and support the upcoming market launch of Lome. Its customers and partners include Coop Sverige, Axfood, Martin & Servera, Sodexo, Protos, Gäsene Mejeri, and Orkla.

“With Axel Johnson as lead investor in this funding round, we strengthen both our financial foundation and our industrial partnerships as we prepare to bring Lome to market. This investment allows us to accelerate the transition from scientific development to real-world impact, enabling farmers with great tools to battle global warming,” said Fredrik Åkerman, CEO of Volta Greentech.
