SUMMARY

  • Ghent-based medtech startup PointCaré has raised nearly €1.5 million from private investors to advance its platform, OnTarget.

The tool is designed to interpret data from various devices in operating rooms and intensive care units in real time, offering caregivers personalised, situation-specific guidance.

While working in hospitals, Dr. Van Overmeire noticed that clinical environments often rely on outdated systems. This inspired him to develop a smarter, data-driven solution to improve patient care.

“Critical care is integrated care. Providing care in the OR or ICU involves many components, and the effects of one aspect of treatment often have far-reaching consequences for others,” explains founder and CTO Dr Overmeire.

Critical care units are packed with advanced devices that produce large amounts of data. But data alone isn't enough—what matters is turning that information into the right action. That’s where PointCaré steps in.

Dr. Overmeire explains that while modern IoT technologies and communication tools let medical devices share information, they don’t add much value without a system to interpret it all in one place. PointCaré aims to fill that gap by turning complex data into clear, actionable insights for caregivers.

“Existing equipment often fails to take the individual context of each patient into account — each case, situation, and person is different.

This leads not only to diminished care quality and suboptimal treatments but also puts a heavy burden on healthcare workers, contributing to alarm fatigue and its consequences.”

The OnTarget platform collects and centralizes real-time data from multiple sources, offering full contextual awareness. It uses AI to assist doctors and nurses in making accurate, well-informed decisions by considering as many relevant variables as possible and presenting a complete view of the patient’s condition.

“Beyond the clear benefits for the individual patient, by avoiding complications, we can also reduce costs in a healthcare system under immense pressure,” says CEO Veronique Pattyn.

For its OnTarget platform, PointCaré combines classical NLP techniques and large language models (LLMs) with its own proprietary agentic AI methods, designed to provide full transparency in clinical decision-making.

“Unlike many AI models today, the OnTarget platform is not a statistical ‘black box’ with hidden logic: every recommendation must be clearly traceable through a reasoning process expressed in understandable language” expanded Dr Van Overmeire.

PointCaré aims to set a new standard in the global healthcare space. The company has already filed its first patent and is actively working toward European MDR (Medical Device Regulation) approval.

With the newly raised funds, founder Dr. Van Overmeire plans to advance the platform’s development and begin clinical validation. The goal is to launch OnTarget internationally by 2028.
