Kassel-based SWARM Biotactics, a German startup specialising in biorobotics, has raised €10M in seed funding, bringing its total funding to €13M after a previous €3M pre-seed round.

SUMMARY

  • Kassel-based SWARM Biotactics, a German startup specialising in biorobotics, has raised €10M in seed funding, bringing its total funding to €13M after a previous €3M pre-seed round.

The latest round was backed by international investors including Vertex Ventures US, Possible Ventures, and Capnamic, with early backers also increasing their investment.

The technology merges biology with edge AI, swarm intelligence, and secure communications, offering a unique solution for real-time intelligence in extreme conditions.

Stefan Wilhelm, CEO of SWARM Biotactics, says, “We’re entering a decade where access, autonomy, and resilience define geopolitical advantage. Conventional systems fail where control is needed most—denied zones, collapsed infrastructure, and politically complex terrain. SWARM is the first company building an entirely new category of robotics: biologically integrated, AI-enabled, and mass-deployable systems for persistent intelligence in places no drone or ground robot can reach.”

SWARM Biotactics sees strong potential for its bio-robotic technology in sectors like defence, national security, disaster response, and industrial inspection—where reaching difficult or dangerous environments is essential.

With the new funding, the company plans to move from research to real-world deployment in defence and emergency response. The investment will support key priorities, including expanding pilot programs with agencies in Europe and North America, ramping up production of its custom sensor backpacks and neural interfaces, and building international teams for engineering and go-to-market efforts.

Over the next year, SWARM will also hire experts in insect neurobiology, embedded AI, field robotics, and dual-use system integration to accelerate development.

CEO Stefan Wilhelm says, “This funding moves us from deep tech to deployment—delivering the infrastructure democracies need to operate more smartly, more safely, and with total tactical awareness.”

Moritz Strube, CTO and co-founder, adds, “Our mission is to build a scalable, dual-use intelligence platform that adapts to any terrain, threat, or mission. This funding round validates the vision—and brings in the right global partners to help us scale.”

Headquartered in Kassel, Germany, with a subsidiary in San Francisco, SWARM Biotactics is building at the crossroads of biology and advanced robotics.

With €10M in seed funding, the company is now shifting from research to real-world applications, targeting potential use by government and emergency services.

By focusing on dual-use technology, SWARM aims to serve both military and civilian sectors—opening doors to a wider market beyond defence.

As it continues to refine its controllable bio-robots, SWARM positions itself as a frontrunner in mission-critical robotics for hard-to-reach and high-risk environments.

About SWARM Biotactics

Founded in 2024, SWARM Biotactics is developing a new kind of robotics using controllable living insects. Their bio-robotic systems, such as cockroaches with custom backpacks, are built to explore and gather data from high-risk, cluttered, or inaccessible environments where traditional robots can't operate effectively.
