Knowunity began as a TikTok-style app where students shared notes and explanations. Today, it has grown into a powerful AI study companion, with the same mission—to create a tool students love to use, recommend to friends, and return to often.
Students use the app over five times a week to study for exams, understand tough subjects, and plan their revision. The most popular content is short, visual, and matches their school curriculum. Knowunity continues to grow mainly through word of mouth.
Now, this content supports Knowunity’s personalised AI tutor, which gives students tailored suggestions and audio explainers using real-life examples. Unlike regular chatbots, Knowunity’s AI is trained on more than 3 million student-created resources and customised for different countries and school systems.
Thanks to the AI features, student engagement has increased. On average, users now use the app more than seven times a week, with especially high usage among younger students.
Benedict Kurz, co-founder and CEO of Knowunity, said: We started Knowunity because education was being left behind. Every other part of our lives – how we shop, connect, or stay fit – was becoming smarter and more personalised. But school? Still one-size-fits-all. With AI, we can finally give students what they actually need: instant feedback, tailored learning plans, and real motivation. Our goal is to make this companion experience available to a billion students worldwide & therewith allow truly personalised education for every student.
Knowunity’s long-term goal is to make high-quality, personalised learning available to every student worldwide—offering 24/7 smart support that’s much more affordable than traditional tutoring.
The latest funding round was led by XAnge, with support from Portfolion, Isomer Capital, Project A, Redalpine, and Educapital. Well-known investors like Verena Pausder (Startup Association chair) and Arthur Kosten (Booking.com founder) also joined the round.
Valerie Bures, partner at XAnge, commented: Knowunity is revolutionising the entire education system and will, in the future, provide every student with a personal, AI-based learning companion that explains all topics to them and prepares them for their exams.
Knowunity uses a freemium model—core features are free, with an optional premium subscription for extra benefits. It also works with brands like Vodafone, Gothaer, and Porsche through employer branding partnerships. Most of its revenue now comes from a fast-growing B2C subscription business, expanding one country at a time.
With the latest funding, Knowunity has raised a total of €45 million. This will help the company improve its AI learning companion, grow its team, and expand into new markets, especially in the US and Asia, aiming to reach 1 billion students worldwide.
