Inspiration behind the story:
At that time, one of the founders, Sabatini, was working in the oil and gas industry. During his work, he discovered that the food sector was the second-largest contributor to global CO2 emissions. Concerned about this issue, he discussed it with his friend D’Alessandro, a marketing expert with experience in the chocolate industry. Together, they recognized the urgency of the problem and began exploring sustainable solutions to tackle the environmental challenges posed by the food sector.
Bottiroli, a highly regarded researcher from Wageningen University, joined the team with his wealth of experience in the food sector. His extensive research in the field made him an invaluable asset to the team. Additionally, Brochetta, a long-time friend and close collaborator of Bottiroli, also joined with the experience of working on a number of innovative food product development projects.
Following extensive careers in various multinational corporations, where they gained invaluable knowledge and expertise, the team members came together with a shared vision to make a meaningful, positive impact on the world. The four founders embarked on their entrepreneurial journey with a mission to address the environmental impact of the food industry.
The story behind the startup:
They were now committed to in-depth research on the food sector's impact and discovered that chocolate, despite its global popularity, has a darker side in its production. The chocolate industry significantly contributes to deforestation in cocoa-growing areas. More than 40% of Italy's cocoa imports came from the Ivory Coast in 2020, and 18% came from Ghana. The Ivory Coast, the world's largest cocoa producer, has lost over 85% of its forests since 1960 due to cocoa farming. Additionally, rising raw material costs have hit the cocoa market hard, with prices increasing by 300% in the past year, causing concerns in the food industry.
More than 1.5 million children are forced into the cocoa harvesting process. Chocolate is recognized as the most water-intensive ingredient, requiring approximately 24,000 liters of water to produce just one kilogram. In terms of carbon emissions, chocolate is a significant contributor, ranking second among all CO2 emitters. The high level of emissions is primarily driven by logistics and the exploitation of land for cocoa production.
After recognizing these issues, the founders decided to address the gap in the food sector, and this was the beginning of their startup journey.
About their startup:
It was time for them to turn their concept into reality. In 2023, they launched their entrepreneurial venture, Foreverland, an Italian food-tech startup based in Milan. Foreverland focuses on creating new ingredients for a delicious future, beginning with cocoa-free chocolate alternatives. This innovative startup is dedicated to providing sustainable solutions in the chocolate industry.
Freecao is an innovative ingredient that transforms the confectionery industry. This ingredient stands out from traditional options, like cocoa, by offering various benefits, such as being more sustainable and healthier. It offers significant environmental benefits, cutting CO2 emissions by 80% and reducing water use by 90% compared to traditional cocoa. Made from carob, a legume that Italy is known for producing in large quantities, Freecao showcases the potential of carob, which is often overlooked.
Aspirations for the Future
The company is dedicated to prioritizing research and development (R&D) to enhance its capabilities and product offerings. By focusing on R&D, it aims to develop innovative solutions that foster sustainability within the food industry. This approach tackles environmental issues like climate change and resource depletion. Furthermore, the company is focused on improving social factors, such as food security and fair labor practices. Ultimately, it seeks to achieve economic viability while positively impacting society and the environment.
What makes their story truly inspiring is that, instead of overlooking the problem, they pursued a solution and ultimately founded a thriving business. The founders serve as an inspiring example of how vision, resilience, and strategic thinking can lead to remarkable success.
European entrepreneurs are truly inspiring, as they are not only revolutionizing the food sector but also making a positive impact on the planet, building a successful business.
