CarbonX funding news - Amsterdam-based CarbonX has Secured an Additional €4Million Funding

Amsterdam-based CarbonX, a deep tech startup working on improving battery anode materials, has raised an extra €4M, adding to its €10M growth funding round.

The funding was supported by current investors Innovation Industries and Borski Fund, as well as new investor Energy Transition Fund Rotterdam, managed by InnovationQuarter.

What does CarbonX offer?

Battery makers face supply chain risks because 95% of graphite, an essential material for batteries, comes from China. While efforts like the US Inflation Reduction Act and the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act are trying to solve these problems, affordable and scalable solutions are still hard to find.

CarbonX, founded by Rutger Van Raalten and Daniela Sordi, offers a solution: locally made carbon anode material that costs the same as Chinese graphite but offers faster charging, longer battery life, and a smaller carbon footprint.

The company is now in the final stages of testing with leading global battery manufacturers and expects to secure its first agreements by mid-2025.

The company uses a special emulsion feedstock technology that reduces energy use during production, compared to traditional graphite methods, which helps lower costs and environmental impact.

Daniela Sordi, CTO of CarbonX, says, “Our feedstock technology seamlessly integrates into existing carbon black manufacturing plants resulting in the production of a novel structured carbon material that functions as an active anode material, like graphite. CarbonX’s unique 3D porous network structure improves electron- and lithium-ion transfer, while it is still highly compressible to achieve high energy densities.”

CarbonX will use the funds to fulfill its first agreements and increase local production through contract manufacturing.

The company will staff its new 200 m² lab to support clients and develop new anode materials, including high-energy density and fully recyclable grades.

CarbonX is also planning to build a large feedstock mixing facility at the Port of Rotterdam and is conducting studies for a 20,000-ton production line in both Europe and the US.

Co-founder Rutger van Raalten, says, “CarbonX is setting the stage for a resilient, independent battery anode material supply chain that aligns with global sustainability goals. By being price competitive while outperforming graphite on performance, we’re empowering the battery industry to meet the demands of a rapidly growing electric future.”

About CarbonX

CarbonX helps solve graphite shortages by producing in carbon black plants around the world, creating local supply chains. Their 3D network structure improves battery performance by overcoming the 2D limitations of traditional graphite.
