Black Semiconductor funding news - Germany-based Black Semiconductor Acquires Applied Nanolayers

Black Semiconductor, a German company that specializes in chip connectivity, has bought the Dutch company Applied Nanolayers to speed up the development of its Integrated Graphene Photonics (IGP) technology by two years.

SUMMARY

  • Black Semiconductor, a German company that specializes in chip connectivity, has bought the Dutch company Applied Nanolayers to speed up the development of its Integrated Graphene Photonics (IGP) technology by two years.
  • Black Semiconductor is a deep-tech company creating chip technology that uses graphene to improve chip connectivity. This allows multiple chips to work together as one system.
  • Applied Nanolayers based in Delft and founded in 2012, is developing a platform for the semiconductor industry that focuses on graphene and other two-dimensional materials.

The IGP platform is built to allow energy-efficient, high-speed data communication. It connects thousands of chips to work as one system, helping progress in areas like AI, robotics, autonomous driving, and high-performance computing.

By combining Black Semiconductor’s knowledge of chip design and photonic technology with Applied Nanolayers’ expertise in graphene material production, the company aims to improve its technology even further.

Black Semiconductor has acquired Applied Nanolayers (ANL), which will now operate as Black Semiconductor Netherlands.

Applied Nanolayers has 12 years of experience in integrating graphene at the wafer level. This acquisition improves Black Semiconductor’s ability to process graphene using a semi-automated 200mm production platform that can produce 10,000 wafers per year.

Dr. Daniel Schall, co-founder and CEO of Black Semiconductor, says, “This acquisition accelerates our technology development, and both teams are mutually excited about the transaction. We will provide the industry with an unbeatable integration of photonics and electronics at a very competitive cost and solve the fundamental performance problems of computer systems.”
