Arborea funding news - Arborea has Raised €5 Million in Funding

Arborea, a startup from the UK and Portugal, has raised €5 million to develop multi-functional proteins and nutritious ingredients using a new microalgae production system. The funding round was led by Indico Capital Partners with support from Banco Português de Fomento (BPF).

Funding Utilisation

The capital will help build Arborea's first large-scale protein production facility, using its innovative Biosolar Leaf technology.

This technology creates nutrient-rich food products with a carbon-negative impact, offering a sustainable solution to global food supply challenges and climate change. Arborea was founded in 2015 and is based in London.

The Biosolar Leaf system has a major advantage: it can grow 50,000 species of photosynthetic microorganisms (like marine microalgae) and other tiny plants cost-effectively and in a carbon-negative way, without needing agricultural land or crops.

This helps reduce the strain on farming land and allows cultivation in different environments, including urban areas. By capturing CO2 and using sunlight as an unlimited resource, the system also helps fight climate change while releasing oxygen during photosynthesis.

Through this technology, Arborea is leading the food industry in creating sustainable products like zero-carbon proteins and other nutritious ingredients. These products can improve global nutrition without harming the environment. Additionally, the Biosolar Leaf technology could help free up agricultural land for nature.

Julian Melchiorri, Founder and CEO at Arborea stated: “This funding marks a pivotal step in our mission to revolutionize food production through our Biosolar Leaf™ technology. By sustainably and carbon-negatively producing multifunctional protein—clean in taste, color, and adaptable to diverse food applications—we are tackling two of the world’s most pressing challenges: food security and climate change. We are proud to partner with Indico Capital Partners and Banco Português de Fomento to scale innovative, nature-positive solutions that will transform the future of food and restore balance to our planet.”

Stephan de Moraes, Managing General Partner at Indico Capital Partners, added: “We believe that the investment in Arborea will have a transformative impact on the food industry, particularly in replacing animal protein. The Biosolar Leaf™ cultivation system from microalgae enables the production of a higher quantity of protein compared to any other food production method, including agriculture and animal production. This investment will be crucial in consolidating Arborea’s position as a leader in creating innovative solutions for a more sustainable and resilient future.”

About Arborea

At Arborea, they love food, but as the world’s population grows, Earth’s resources for producing food are limited and stressed by climate change. This is leading to higher hunger, malnutrition, and food prices. Their mission is to speed up the shift to sustainable food by creating healthy food ingredients using the most advanced organic farming systems powered by nature.
