SUMMARY
- Proba, an Amsterdam-based startup focused on certifying Scope 3 emissions reductions in the agri-food supply chain, has raised €1.25 million to support its expansion into the United States and Brazil.
The funding round included participation from existing investors Future Food Fund, Yield Lab Europe, and Value Factory Ventures.
Founded in 2022 by Sijbrand Tieleman and Rutger Been, Proba converts fertiliser emission reductions and other climate interventions into certified Scope 3 results.
The Amsterdam-based startup addresses agriculture’s significant climate impact, noting that nitrogen fertilisers alone account for around 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Proba sees expansion across the Americas as a key opportunity to scale Scope 3 reductions in regions responsible for a large share of global food production. For many staple crops, emissions from fertiliser production and in-field use make up a substantial portion of their overall carbon footprint. Although low-carbon fertiliser solutions already exist, adoption has been slow due to high costs and misaligned incentives across the value chain.
Kim Wagenaar, Investment Director at Future Food Fund, commented, “Proba addresses one of the most material and under-accounted sources of emissions in the agri-food sector. Their approach combines strong scientific grounding with a practical pathway for companies to act on Scope 3. We see significant potential for their model as companies face increasing pressure to deliver verified results.”
Proba helps agri-food companies overcome these barriers by making fertiliser-related emissions reductions measurable, financeable, and credible across supply chains.
It delivers certified Scope 3 impact through Impact Units traceable certificates that quantify, verify, and finance emissions reductions linked to specific practices. Each Impact Unit represents one tonne of verified CO₂e reduction and is recorded in a blockchain-secured registry, with verification by independent third-party auditors prior to issuance.
“Our ambition is to make fertiliser-related Scope 3 reductions standard practice in global agri-food supply chains. This funding accelerates that mission by enabling us to operate in the regions that matter most to our customers, particularly the United States and Brazil,” said Sijbrand Tieleman, CEO and co-founder of Proba.
About Proba
Proba helps the agri-food supply chain achieve climate commitments, starting with fertiliser emissions, by converting reductions into certified Scope 3 impact. The platform makes emissions measurable, verifiable, and financeable, and the company plans to expand into other high-impact interventions, enabling sustainable practices and credible carbon reduction across global food supply chains.
