SUMMARY

  • Amsterdam-based startup Farm in a Box has raised €350,000 from the North Holland Innovation Fund to develop its modular, easy-to-assemble recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS).

The North Holland Innovation Fund supports early-stage innovation through convertible loans. It’s backed by institutions like the Province of North Holland, University of Amsterdam, VU, Amsterdam UMC, and others. The Fund manages two programs—one for innovative startups (supported by RVO) and another for academic startups (supported by the ERDF).

Ludolf Stavenga, fund manager at Innovatiefonds Noord-Holland, says, “Farm in a Box shows how technological innovation can contribute to sustainable food production. The team combines deep sector knowledge with a scalable concept that can make a global impact. We are proud to support this promising initiative in the crucial phase from development to market introduction.”

The funding will help the Dutch startup build a working prototype of its integrated RAS control system. It is also planning to construct and launch a demo unit to support its commercial expansion.

Ohad Maiman, Co-Founder and CEO at Farm in a Box, says, ‘We are grateful for the support and trust of the North Holland Innovation Fund. Thanks to their funding, we can take the next step in our development and make significant progress in our operating system and patent applications.’

Farm in a Box has redesigned its fish farming system using modular components that can be easily assembled on-site. This step-by-step setup makes it more affordable and accessible for fish farmers globally, removing the need for costly and complex infrastructure.

Farm in a Box was founded by Ohad Maiman (ex-CEO of The Kingfish Company) and Thue Holm (ex-CTO of Atlantic Sapphire) to tackle the high costs and long build times slowing down land-based aquaculture. Their modular, prefabricated RAS system makes sustainable fish farming faster, more affordable, and easy to scale.

Farm in a Box has redesigned its RAS system using prefabricated modular parts that can be easily assembled on-site. This lets fish farmers start small and scale up production affordably—without the need for costly, complex setups that are still common in the industry today.

Thue Holm, Co-Founder and CTO at Farm in a Box says, ‘Having built some of the largest systems in the land-based sector, we know the challenges first-hand. We are excited to solve these bottlenecks with our innovative modular and prefabricated solution,’ said the co-founder.
